The Shop Foreman is responsible for the day-to-day leadership, technical oversight, and coordination of shop activities related to the inspection, maintenance, and repair of cranes, track hoes, and other heavy equipment. This role provides hands-on technical leadership to Crane and Heavy Equipment Mechanics while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in collaboration with Operations / Dispatch.
The Shop Foreman acts as the primary technical escalation point within the shop and plays a critical role in minimizing equipment downtime, maintaining safety compliance, and supporting operational readiness.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervision and technical leadership to Crane Mechanics and Track Hoe / Heavy Equipment Mechanics.
- Assign, prioritize, and coordinate daily shop work to meet operational and safety requirements.
- Act as the senior technical escalation point for complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues.
- Diagnose and support major repairs, overhauls, and troubleshooting as required.
- Review and approve repair plans, inspection findings, and return-to-service decisions.
- Ensure all maintenance and repairs are completed in accordance with OEM specifications, regulatory requirements, and Centurion standard.
- Promote and enforce a strong safety-first culture in compliance with Alberta OH&S legislation.
- Oversee crane inspections, certifications, and maintenance documentation, including out-of-service determinations when required.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance activities to minimize equipment downtime.
- Communicate equipment status, risks, and delays to Operations and Dispatch in a timely manner.
- Mentor, coach, and develop mechanics through on-the-job training and technical guidance.
- Support onboarding and training of new mechanics and apprentices.
- Assist with parts planning, tooling requirements, and inventory coordination.
- Collaborate with Operations, Dispatch, and Field Staff to align shop priorities with business needs.
- Identify opportunities to improve shop efficiency, workflow, and maintenance practice.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and standardization of maintenance processes.
Requirements
- Journeyman certification as a Heavy Equipment Technician or equivalent trade experience; crane-specific experience in an oilfield, industrial, or equipment rental/service environment is strongly preferred.
- Significant experience working on cranes and/or heavy equipment, including hydraulic systems.
- Previous experience in a lead mechanic, foreman, or supervisory role.
- Strong understanding of safety regulations and mechanical standards.
- Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and inspection reports.
